Die etwas dickliche, rothaarige Janet Frame wird von allen für etwas zurückgeblieben gehalten. Niemand bemerkt ihre herausragende Fantasie, die ihr hilft, aus der Realität in ihre eigene Märchenwelt zu flüchten. Als ihre geliebte Schwester stirbt, zieht sich Janet noch mehr zurück. Daraufhin wird bei ihr Schizophrenie diagnostiziert und sie kommt in eine geschlossene Anstalt. Nach acht Jahren wird sie endlich entlassen, kann sich ihrer Leidenschaft, der Literatur, widmen und muss lernen, in der wirklichen Welt zurechtzukommen. Janet Frame gilt heute als die bekannteste Schriftstellerin Neuseelands.
